Blinds Chalet Announces 7 Ways to Use Window Treatments to Lower Your Energy Costs

Blinds Chalet announces 7 ways window treatments save you money. Cutting back is a nationwide movement, but suffering through the summer's heat doesn't have to be part of the plan. As summer approaches, Blinds Chalet shows how to use window treatments to lower energy bills.

Phoenix, AZ (Vocus/PRWEB ) March 19, 2009 -- The heat of summer is no friend to the frugal consumer. As the heat rises, so do the energy bills. Ron Manwaring of Blinds Chalet says, "We know consumers across the board are attempting to lower their average daily cost of living so we're offering consumers 7 items to consider in relation to lowering this summer's energy bills."

1. R Value: The measurement for heat flow through a window. A standard single glazed window has an R Value of 1. In comparison, a double cell honeycomb shade paired with a blackout shade liner comes with an R Value up to 8. Any window covering will increase the R Value of your windows, but talk to an expert in the industry to discover just how helpful various products are in relation to reaching the maximum R Value.

2. U Factor: The average home loses 5% of its total energy through closed windows. Window treatments decrease the U-Factor of your windows. This means less cold air will escape.

3. Inside vs. Outside Mounting: Inside mounted shades and/or blinds are more energy efficient than those mounted on the outside. A snug installation of an inside mounted shade limits the amount of air that can slip between the shade and the wall and increases energy efficiency.

4. Greenhouse Effect: The heating of your home by sunlight passing through sealed, transparent windows. Use your window treatments when the sun is at its highest, cover your windows by closing your shades or blinds. Once the rays of the sun filter into your home, the heat is then trapped. Stop the heat before it enters with light filtering or blackout shades which are some of the most effective solar radiation blockers.

5. Dynamic Control: Window treatments that easily let you control the amount of solar radiation (such as light filtering shades) are a great as they will allow you to block as much as possible during the summer months while allowing some heat gain to allow for natural heating during the winter months.

6. Green Guard: Watch for Green Guard certification. The Green Guard certification ensures that your window covering will emit Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's) into the air within legal limits.

7. Turn Off the Lights: Tap the advantages of light filtering shades or solar shades. Window treatments that allow you to use the daylight to light your home rather than block out all the natural light and then pay to light your home will lower your energy expenditures. The right shade will draw natural light into your home more efficiently than a window without a shade. Efficient shades can keep your home bright with natural light while simultaneously blocking sun radiation and heat.
