Blinds Chalet reminds customers that this week is National Window Safety Week. The goal of this week is to encourage adults to take steps to observe year round window safety and heighten the awareness of what parents and caregivers should do to ensure window safety in the home.

The goal of this week is to encourage adults to take steps to observe year round window safety and heighten the awareness of what parents and caregivers should do to ensure window safety in the home.
Blinds Chalet reminds customers of the following facts and tips about window safety:
1. Furniture Placement - Keep furniture away from windows so that children don't use such objects as a climbing aid.
2. Window Guards and Window Stops - Screens are not window guards; don't depend on them for safety. They are not designed to keep your child from falling out of an open window, or an unlocked window they opened. Purchase a window guard designed for this purpose. (Contact your local fire department or building code official for advice on proper window guard placement). You can also consider window stops which blocks the window from opening more than 4 inches.
3. Release Mechanisms - Always check to make sure the window guard or stop you are considering installing comes equipped with a release mechanism. Windows serve a primary function in the home/office as an escape route in case of fire or other emergency.
4. Safe Maintenance of Corded Window Treatments - If you do have corded window blinds, shades or drapes that have looped pull cords, consider replacing the products with cordless window blinds, shades or drapes. Or request your free retro-fit kit from www.windowcoveringsafetycouncil.org.
5. Windows as an Escape Route - windows can provide a secondary exit route from a burning building. Determine your family's emergency escape plan and help children learn how to safely use a window under these circumstances. Also for this purpose, make sure that windows are not blocked or painted shut.
6. Open Windows - Keep windows closed and locked around small children if a window guard is not in place. Consider placing shrubs, wood chips or grass beneath windows to lessen the impact if a fall does occur.
