New York, NY (PRWEB) November 3, 2009 -- You’d think that an author with 22 popular motivational books to his credit would stop there. But not Alan Cohen. He is intent on moving beyond the world of self-help to introduce a fictional character who will inspire readers to change their lives.
Page-turner with a purpose
"Linden’s Last Life" debuts this week, the story of a down-and-out guy who is about to leap to oblivion from the Golden Gate Bridge - until he is stopped by a mysterious monk who tells him that if he runs away, he will just have to return and his troubles will be even worse. Given a week to choose between life and death, Linden makes a supernatural deal to die and never come back to earth. But when an unexpected event occurs, he questions his decision. Can he reverse the dark destiny he has set in motion?
“The novel seeks to shed light on the answers to two fundamental questions most people face sooner or later,” Cohen said in an interview at the Carlsbad, California headquarters of Hay House, the book’s publisher. “Who is in charge of your life?” and “Is your life worth living?”
The story, an intriguing blend of adventure, romance, and mysticism, takes its unlikely hero to the far reaches of India and Tibet, where he must figure out if he belongs in or out of life. Cohen hopes the novel will speak to people who are seeking to find their own direction in life, as well as those who may be in pain, fear, or confusion about the value or quality of their journey.
Book reviewers are finding the book “a refreshing upgrade from simple entertainment,” and “an unusual read that I had to finish in one sitting.” Amazon.com reviewer Patrice Strange notes, “It was one of those rare books that is so well written that you could read it very quickly but want to slow down to savor the experience.”
A movie based on the book is in development with New York-based producer Atlantis Productions. Atlantis executive Fran Goldsmith noted, “Alan Cohen’s screenplay is a rare page-turner with juicy characters. We are committed to producing films that uplift as well as entertain. This adventure is right in our pipeline.”
In addition to hoping to give readers a better handle on their lives, Cohen intends to help several charities with the profits from the book and film. Suicide prevention organizations and groups supporting Tibetan refugees will be the recipients of donations from product sales.
Alan Cohen is the author of 22 popular inspirational books, including bestsellers "The Dragon Doesn’t Live Here Anymore" and "Why Your Life Sucks and What You Can Do About It," and the award-winning "A Deep Breath of Life."
