American Society Of Interventional Pain Physicians (ASIPP) Launches Resident & Fellows Section

In an effort to foster the education and development of aspiring pain physicians by means of establishing evidence-based guidelines of clinical practice and responsible patient care, the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians (ASIPP) has introduced a Resident and Fellow's section.

New York, NY (PRWEB) November 2, 2009 -- The Resident and Fellow's section of ASIPP is dedicated to fostering ties between residents, fellows and practicing interventional pain physicians in both academic and private practice, and increasing awareness and cooperative involvement in the political process surrounding the practice of medicine and interventional pain in the 21st century. ASIPP will soon introduce a series of courses designed to educate and standardize the practice of interventional pain procedures at reduced costs to member residents and fellows. ASIPP will host special resident and fellow seminars during its annual meetings and invites submission of resident abstracts for posters and presentations to its future annual meetings.

Laxmaiah Manchikanti MD, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board, ASIPP remarked, "We are pleased to announce an official Resident and Fellow's section (RFS) of the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians (ASIPP). As many of you know ASIPP is one of the organizations dedicated to the creation of standardized guidelines for the practice of interventional pain management."

"The creation of the Residents and Fellow's section comes during an already exciting year for ASIPP with the forthcoming release of the 2009 Comprehensive Evidence-Based Guidelines for Interventional Techniques in the Management of Chronic Spinal Pain and having been granted an official seat in the American Medical Association," added Dr. Manchikanti. "All of this comes at a critical time with much focus on evidence-based practice and justification for healthcare expenditures by the government."

"We believe that the formation of the Residents and Fellows section will serve to bring to these young physicians a more thorough, well-rounded understanding of the specialty of Interventional Pain Management," said ASIPP President, Ramsin Benyamin, MD. "The medical environment today has become very complicated; programs such as these are necessary to prepare physicians for the complexities of their chosen profession."

ASIPP has been closely involved in the passage of NASPER legislation critical to the regulation of prescription of narcotic medications, assuring involvement of interventional pain physicians in the on state Carrier Advisory Committees (CACs) across the nation, hosting meetings between ASIPP leadership, key congressional leaders and CMS officials, and pushing passage of a MedPac study bill to examine barriers to coverage, payments for outpatient interventional pain procedures and access to interventional pain management. In addition ASIPP is responsible for publishing its journal Pain Physician, and has authored Evidence-Based Practice Guidelines in the management of Chronic Spinal and Non-Spinal Pain. ASIPP also offers board certification in Interventional Pain Management through the American Board of Interventional Pain Physicians (ABIPP), and competency certification in Controlled Substance Management, Coding and Compliance Practice Management and Fluoroscopic Interpretation and Radiological Safety.

The ASIPP Resident and Fellow's section has already launched a 'Facebook' page under 'American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians Resident/Fellow Section' and encourages all interested residents to join and discuss all concerns regarding the practice of interventional pain, improvement of patient care, and related topics relevant to the current state of medicine.

Haroon Hameed MD, a member of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Johns Hopkins, School of Medicine, was instrumental in the founding of the ASIPP Resident and Fellow's section and was primarily responsible for creating the accompanying 'Facebook' page.

"With social networking playing such a major role in communication today, I felt that our RFS had to establish and maintain an active presence on 'Facebook' and other leading drivers in that space," commented Dr. Hameed. "We believe that the Internet is currently one of the most effective ways for us to exchange ideas among our peers, and we are pursuing options to offer an array of new possibilities for members of our society to communicate with one another."
