New Web presence incorporates visitor-centric calls-to-action, promotes conservation, builds community around department 'brand'

Since its formation in 1911, the Long Beach Water Department (LBWD) has been delivering a dependable water supply meeting or surpassing all applicable water quality standards. The LBWD serves a total population of 492,000, the fifth largest city in the State of California.
"In creating the whole 'Long Beach 90H2O' concept, it was important that we approached it from a community-centric perspective," explained Richard Bergér, VP of E-Business at ASTRALCOM. "The LBWD is an award-winning municipal agency that is dedicated to the service of its customers and we wanted to be sure the community-centric 90H2O concept helped to embrace and to cultivate that," Bergér added.
The new LBWD web presence is a dramatic improvement over the old website design. "In determining traffic patterns and visitor usage of the old website, we were able to create a more effective visitor experience and help guide traffic to the most frequently utilized parts of the site," explained Erik Jensen, Chief Technical Officer at ASTRALCOM.
"We chose ASTRALCOM after reviewing several firms. ASTRALCOM hit the nail on the head from the get-go with their 90H2O concept - it seemed to fit naturally with the Water Department's philosophy and objectives," stated Matthew Veeh, Acting Director of Government and Public Affairs for the Long Beach Water Department. "Working with ASTRALCOM's team enabled us to create an engaging, informative and educational experience on our new website. Moreover, they packaged it in a way that will be extremely user-friendly for our customers," added Mr.Veeh.
Among the new design and reworked content, the new web presence includes a more streamlined navigation that presents visitors with clear pathways and unique elements.
There is a local map of the nurseries that offer drought-resistant plants, an online kid's games and learning section, a Second Life presence that virtually demonstrates the design and use of conservation gardens; all of which provide an overall intuitive, engaging and educational visitor experience.
"The Long Beach 90H2O project was a fun and rewarding project because it enabled our involvement with an important cause: water conservation," stated Bergér. "We're honored that the Long Beach Water Department selected ASTRALCOM as their digital business development partner on this project and we hope that both the Long Beach Water Department and the residents of Long Beach enjoy the new presence for years to come," added Bergér.
