Prestwick House Remains a Top-Notch Place to Work Despite Economic Climate
Delaware-based publishing company is recognized as having the right balance of work and fun for the third year in a row by "2009 Best Book Publishing Companies" Survey
Smyrna, DE (PRWEB) November 1, 2009 -- This week, Prestwick House, Inc. was named 10th in Book Business Magazine's annual "Best Book Publishing Companies to Work For" survey. Prestwick House is one of only two businesses to appear consistently on this prestigious list since the survey's inception in 2007.
Like many industries, publishing faced a difficult year. Many companies were forced to face layoffs, cutbacks, and discontented employees. The companies included in the list of winners are those who, according to Book Business, "created a more positive work environment without necessarily increasing spending" in the face of this challenging economic climate.
"Common among most of the 'Best Companies' is an effort to not only ask employees for their opinions and suggestions, but to also actually utilize those suggestions -- [which] can directly benefit a company. Prestwick House (no. 10 on the list) believes that there cannot be true customer satisfaction in the absence of employee satisfaction--a concept that many companies unfortunately just don't get," says Book Business editor Noelle Skodzinski in her note to readers entitled "Great Places to Work in Not-So-Great Times."
"That said, companies that understand the value of a happy employee culture also seem to go the extra mile in offering benefits that help employees balance work with their personal lives."
Prestwick House CEO Jason Scott agrees, saying, "A commitment to workplace harmony, a low-pressure and high-accountability culture, and trust in employees' judgment are investments in work quality and efficiency which pay high dividends for Prestwick House."
According to the survey, qualities that set apart the "best" businesses from those that are simply good include "good-to-great benefits, respect for employees, recognition of employees' hard work and accomplishments, an open management style, and a sense of camaraderie and shared achievement."
In addition to offering a benefits package that includes matching 401k contributions and health, life, dental, disability, and vision insurance, Prestwick House encourages a healthy work-life balance and collegial atmosphere, according to the survey results.
"With options such as telecommuting and a flexible work schedule, tuition reimbursement, and paid time off for community service opportunities, employees are able to really build their own experience and grow in their field," says Prestwick House copywriter Annie Rizzuto. "Prestwick House doesn't just contract employees, they actually take the time to invest in our futures and make us an integral part of the team."
