UNCG Debuts Online Graduate Course in Liberal Studies, Lets the General Public Participate over the Web

UNCG's latest online course in Graduate Liberal Studies explores up and coming powerhouses on the global stage. The course makes the most of online media -- including chat rooms, blogs, YouTube, Wikipedia and RSS news feeds from the BBC, New York Times and other media outlets. The University encourages the general public follow along and participate in the dialog on hot topics.

Greensboro, N.C. (PRWEB) November 2, 2009 -- UNCG's latest online course in Graduate Liberal Studies draws directly from today's headlines to teach students how to analyze news and to spot up and coming powerhouses on the global stage. And in a unique wrinkle, the general public is invited to follow along and dialog on hot topics.

"Emerging Powers is unlike any course we've offered before since it will be largely delivered over public media," says Kathleen Forbes, Director of the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MALS) Program. "Students will get the feeling they're participating in world events as they happen, and those in the community will be able to contribute to the discussion without worrying about grades or course credits."

Designed by the University's Division of Continual Learning, Emerging Powers makes the most of the Web. Students participate in online chats, blog their opinions, view videos on YouTube, post class projects to Wikipedia and read RSS news feeds from the BBC, New York Times and other media outlets. Course instructors showcase their passionate opinions on world issues in an online video dialogue modeled after CNN's Crossfire.

Emerging Powers (MLS 620) counts as three credit hours towards a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies degree or a post-baccalaureate Certificate in Global Studies. Four UNCG faculty members partnered with the UNCG Division of Continual Learning to develop the course: William Hamilton, Jeff Jones, David Meyers and Susan Walcott.
