IES Abroad Awards $846,000 in Aid for Fall 2008 Study Abroad

Building on a nearly six decade commitment to making study abroad affordable, IES Abroad (the Institute for the International Education of Students) will award more than $846,000 in scholarships and financial aid to 637 students participating in its Fall 2008 international study programs. IES Abroad commits $2 million per year to financial support programs, more than any other independent U.S. study abroad program provider. Since 1996, IES Abroad has awarded more than $13 million in financial aid to 9,355 students.

Chicago (PRWEB) July 14, 2008 -- Building on a nearly six decade commitment to making study abroad affordable, IES Abroad (the Institute for the International Education of Students) will award more than $846,000 in scholarships and financial aid to 637 students participating in its Fall 2008 international study programs. IES Abroad commits $2 million per year to financial support programs, more than any other independent U.S. study abroad program provider. Since 1996, IES Abroad has awarded more than $13 million in financial aid to 9,355 students.
   
"International experience is critical for today's college students," said Mary Dwyer, Ph.D., president and CEO of IES Abroad. "That's why IES Abroad continues to dedicate significant resources to scholarships and financial aid to make that experience possible for students who might otherwise miss out."

Scholarships and financial aid were awarded in the following categories:

 
  • Merit-Based Scholarships: A total of 78 students, out of a record applicant pool of 638, were chosen to receive merit-based scholarships totaling $125,000 in 15 different IES Abroad scholarship categories. The scholarships require each recipient to have a minimum 3.3 GPA and to pass a rigorous review and selection process overseen by a panel of U.S. faculty from prestigious universities.
  • Diversity Scholarships. Diversity scholarships totaling more than $63,500 were awarded to 38 students. Scholarships awarded include merit-based diversity scholarships, the David Porter Study Abroad Diversity Scholarship and the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Scholarship.
  • Need-Based Scholarships and Aid. More than $165,000 in need-based aid was awarded to 188 students who attend private colleges and universities that are a Member or Associate Member of the IES Abroad college consortium.
  • Public University Grants. In addition, 325 students attending public colleges or universities have qualified for IES Abroad Public University Grants of nearly $487,000.
  • Legacy Scholarships. Legacy scholarships, totaling $6,000, were awarded to eight students for the upcoming semester. The scholarships are open to any student whose parent, legal guardian, grandparent, or sibling attended a past IES Abroad program.
